FunderFinder, the database resource for charities, containing fundraising information closed. Jo Habib of FunderFinder said that, “In the current economic climate we are not certain we can continue to survive financially, and so intend to wind the charity up after our current subscribers’ subscriptions expire in July 2011″.

Jo added, “Essentially we earn all our income from subscriptions. A lot of our subscribers are having to make serious cuts, some are closing down, and almost everyone anticipates that things will get worse in the months to come. There are a number of other pressures too: commercial companies aggressively selling funding portals to local authorities, for instance, and a general belief that funding information should be – and probably is – freely available somewhere on the internet.

We know that very many of our subscribers have compared the results of a FunderFinder search with the results of other searches and value the comprehensive, accurate and targeted nature of our results, but many people don’t have the knowledge or the inclination to discriminate in this way”.

In view of the tragic loss of this essential service to all third sector and voluntary groups, I think it important that some sort of legacy is made available.  Thus this brief mention of FunderFinder along with some of the data which it held on grants and trusts which people can apply for.

“We don’t need a lot of ‘Make A Difference’ days, or competitively tendered government contracts to deliver services. None of that really helps self help – some of it, such as the approach of local government to commissioning care – actually diminishes it. The area of funding is becoming a very specialised and controlled area of life which excludes a great number of community initiatives from getting the basic financial support they may have been able to tap in previous years.  The mantra of social enterprise has created a mass call to turn everything into a business – we must be careful not to damage the merit goods which support civic and social life.

The loss of Funder Finder as a charity which supports other charities is a sign of the demarcation of resources and the building of barriers to small organisations.  Tendering processes are engendering a ‘race to the bottom’ for third sector organisations which, where they were once collaborative, now they are competitive taking care not to share good practice or resources.  The zeitgeist is to view cultural activities through immediate term financial lenses is problematic, particularly as it atomises communities of practice and sets people at odds with each other when we need more social capital.

The culture of outcome and measurement has reached a point where these practices encumber professionals in achieving the job remit they were hired to fulfill.  Many of these measurement practices have a negative effect on the activity or phenomena which they attempt to measure.  Ask a professional you know, whether they feel the bureaucracies which are added onto their job, help them achieve their job…

Hernando de Soto Polar talks of Dead Capital, and I cannot help but feel that ‘Dead Capital‘ is massively on the increase in a society which is increasingly creating barriers to achieve any basic human task.  Dead capital describes property which is informally held that it is not legally recognized – as people do not have access to the law or bureaucratic processes which represent them and facilitate civic work, people have no way to become valued in a society which demands such reifications.

The Ragged project is trying to build communities and interactions between individuals.  In an attempt to do this, and as an example of what a healthy society should embody, we are sharing the resources we have to try to facilitate all the good work out there and communities practicing their arts.  Below are 318 funding resources previously identified from Funder Finder:

the trustees awarded a total of seventy grants ranging in value from
£500 to £45,000 to a range of charitable organisations in accordance
with the following grant making policy:
The primary object of the charity is medical research in its widest
sense, favouring research on a broad front rather than in specialised
fields. For guidance, this might include general medical equipment or
equipment for use in research, or grants to cover travelling and
subsistence expenses for doctors and students studying abroad.
In general, the Foundation gives preference to giving assistance with
the launching and initial stages of new projects and filling in gaps
or shortfalls.
In addition to its medical connection, historically the Foundation has
also supported initiatives for children and youth groups, the
disabled, the countryside, the arts, sport, carers groups and animal
welfare.”
Grants in the year totalled £149,750. The largest grant was £45,000 to
and £5,000 to League of Friends University College London Hospitals.
Other recipients ranged from Alzheimer’s Disease Society and Asthma UK
to Young Actors Theatre.
No ‘bricks & mortar’ grants made except in exceptional circumstances.
