318 Education Funding Resources

FunderFinder, the database resource for charities, containing fundraising information closed. Jo Habib of FunderFinder said that, “In the current economic climate we are not certain we can continue to survive financially, and so intend to wind the charity up after our current subscribers’ subscriptions expire in July 2011″.

funderfinder.org.uk

Jo added, “Essentially we earn all our income from subscriptions. A lot of our subscribers are having to make serious cuts, some are closing down, and almost everyone anticipates that things will get worse in the months to come. There are a number of other pressures too: commercial companies aggressively selling funding portals to local authorities, for instance, and a general belief that funding information should be – and probably is – freely available somewhere on the internet.

We know that very many of our subscribers have compared the results of a FunderFinder search with the results of other searches and value the comprehensive, accurate and targeted nature of our results, but many people don’t have the knowledge or the inclination to discriminate in this way”.

In view of the tragic loss of this essential service to all third sector and voluntary groups, I think it important that some sort of legacy is made available.  Thus this brief mention of FunderFinder along with some of the data which it held on grants and trusts which people can apply for.

“We don’t need a lot of ‘Make A Difference’ days, or competitively tendered government contracts to deliver services. None of that really helps self help – some of it, such as the approach of local government to commissioning care – actually diminishes it. What we do need is government to nurture self help – to support the things that work, that people are already doing that make a difference.” (Martin Sime, Chief Executive, Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations 28th 2011 October)

The area of funding is becoming a very specialised and controlled area of life which excludes a great number of community initiatives from getting the basic financial support they may have been able to tap in previous years.  The mantra of social enterprise has created a mass call to turn everything into a business – we must be careful not to damage the merit goods which support civic and social life.

The loss of Funder Finder as a charity which supports other charities is a sign of the demarcation of resources and the building of barriers to small organisations.  Tendering processes are engendering a ‘race to the bottom’ for third sector organisations which, where they were once collaborative, now they are competitive taking care not to share good practice or resources.  The zeitgeist is to view cultural activities through immediate term financial lenses is problematic, particularly as it atomises communities of practice and sets people at odds with each other when we need more social capital.

The culture of outcome and measurement has reached a point where these practices encumber professionals in achieving the job remit they were hired to fulfill.  Many of these measurement practices have a negative effect on the activity or phenomena which they attempt to measure.  Ask a professional you know, whether they feel the bureaucracies which are added onto their job, help them achieve their job…

Hernando de Soto Polar talks of Dead Capital, and I cannot help but feel that ‘Dead Capital‘ is massively on the increase in a society which is increasingly creating barriers to achieve any basic human task.  Dead capital describes property which is informally held that it is not legally recognized – as people do not have access to the law or bureaucratic processes which represent them and facilitate civic work, people have no way to become valued in a society which demands such reifications.

The Ragged project is trying to build communities and interactions between individuals.  In an attempt to do this, and as an example of what a healthy society should embody, we are sharing the resources we have to try to facilitate all the good work out there and communities practicing their arts.  Below are 318 funding resources previously identified from Funder Finder:

This search was carried out on 8th November 2010 in anticipation of putting an application to become a charitable body.  The Ragged project has not yet achieved charitable status but hopes to put in an application soon…

From the funder’s annual report 2007-08: “The Trust aims to give
grants to alleviate poverty, promote health and education, to support
the arts, research, religious activities and the provision of decent
housing. The objective is to distribute at least 50% of donations to
Jewish charities (in the UK, overseas and in Israel), of the remainder
about 40% to be donated to charities operating in the UK and about 60%
outside the UK.
During the year 2007/08 the Trustees made 77 donations, of which 31
exceeded £1,000. The grants were for general charitable purposes
including relief of poverty, health and education. Grants were
received from the Ralph and Muriel Emanuel Charitable Settlement, a
charitable Trust with common Trustees and similar charitable
objectives, following the winding up of that Trust on 5 April 2008.
This has resulted in a substantial increase in the level of donations
received during the year.”

This strand of the trust’s record relates to its interest in funding in the
UK.
The trust says, “The Trustees respond to a wide and eclectic variety
of projects to conserve buildings and important aspects of Britain’s
cultural heritage. They may also support:
– Regional museums with revenue costs or the purchase of exceptionally
important artefacts;
– Educational access to museums and galleries particularly for the
disabled and disadvantaged;
– Projects to conserve the industrial and maritime heritage of the UK;
– Work to encourage arts outreach and musical opportunities for young
people and the elderly;
– Notable archaeological projects in the UK;
– Projects to encourage rural crafts and heritage maintenance skills;
– Applied arts and crafts.”
With the Cathedrals programme, “The Trustees allocate a substantial
sum each year for repair work to the fabric of cathedrals and large
ecclesiastical buildings of exceptional architectural merit (pre-18th
century). Modern amenities, organ repair/restoration and choral
scholarships are not normally eligible.”
The Headley Museums Archaeological Acquisition Fund “was established
in 2004 to help regional and local museums purchase treasure. In 2008
it was extended to include other UK archaeological items which are
more than 300 years old. It is delivered in partnership with the
Museums, Libraries and Archives Council/Victoria & Albert Museum
Purchase Grant Fund.”
The Parish Churches programme: “Funding for fabric repair and
restoration is considered for medieval parish churches (or pre-16th
century churches of exceptional architectural merit) in rural,
sparsely populated, less prosperous villages, through a process of
review, diocese by diocese. Urban churches are not eligible, and
funding is available for fabric only (including windows), not
refurbishment or construction of church halls nor other modern
amenities.”

From the funder’s annual report 2008/09: “The objects of the Charity
are the promotion of general charitable purposes; the Trustees give
particular emphasis to projects with medical, educational or cultural
aspects and those that relate to Armenian matters, although they
consider applications for other charitable purposes.
Grantmaking:
Requests for grants are received from the general public and
charitable and other organisations through their knowledge of the
activities of the Foundation and through personal contacts of the
Settlor and the Trustees. As stated above, applications are considered
on the basis of whether they meet the general aims of the Foundation
and the nature of the project concerned. The Foundation will consider
providing assistance to projects that may be partly funded by others
if this will enable the project to proceed. The Trustees have tended
to give greater consideration to religious, environmental, educational
and cultural projects as well as those which are intended to relieve
poverty, illness and suffering.
Achievement and performance:
The level of grants received in 2009 were at a similar level to the
previous year, and totalled £2.6 million. Of this figure and the
brought forward surplus over £3.042 million was disbursed by way of
grants and other donations to other charities and good causes. The
Trustees continue to seek to maintain a low cost ratio within the
Charity.
Donations and grants made can be broken down as follows:
Social Services and Relief – £543,994, 18%, 11 grants, the largest
being £172,499 to Action Innocence and £100,000 to Education Africa
and Prince’s Charities Foundation
Education and Training – £134,685, 4%, 3 grants
Medical Research and care – £45,582, 1%, 3 grants
Culture and the Arts – £416,300, 14%, 3 grants including £250,000 to
Royal Opera House
Religious causes – £992,187, 33%, 3 grants including £981,008 to
Armenian Apostolic Holy Church
Environmental – £909,008, 30%, 1 grant to Foundation Prince Albert 11
Individual grants for religion and Education – £340
The Trustees intend to pursue similar policies with respect to grant
making in 2010 and do not anticipate any significant deviation in the
pattern of donations, although it is anticipated that there may be a
reduction in the level of grants.”

From the Funder’s annual report 2008/09: “During the year under review
the trustees awarded a total of seventy grants ranging in value from
£500 to £45,000 to a range of charitable organisations in accordance
with the following grant making policy:
The primary object of the charity is medical research in its widest
sense, favouring research on a broad front rather than in specialised
fields. For guidance, this might include general medical equipment or
equipment for use in research, or grants to cover travelling and
subsistence expenses for doctors and students studying abroad.
In general, the Foundation gives preference to giving assistance with
the launching and initial stages of new projects and filling in gaps
or shortfalls.
In addition to its medical connection, historically the Foundation has
also supported initiatives for children and youth groups, the
disabled, the countryside, the arts, sport, carers groups and animal
welfare.”
Grants in the year totalled £149,750. The largest grant was £45,000 to
and £5,000 to League of Friends University College London Hospitals.
Other recipients ranged from Alzheimer’s Disease Society and Asthma UK
to Young Actors Theatre.
No ‘bricks & mortar’ grants made except in exceptional circumstances.
Mainly headquarters of organisations. No grants for salaries.
