“Scotland is a great country to call home. But we can make it an even better place. Achieving this will require a strong competitive economy and a fairer, more equal society. The two go hand in hand. Right now people across Scotland are working to that end. Working together we can do even more to secure better opportunities for all of us and for future generations.

To get there, more of us need to join the conversation that is already happening about the kind of Scotland we want to see in the future. We want you to share your ideas as well as the future is a shared one.

By the end of 2015 we want to have created opportunities for the widest possible range of voices to be heard. This will include a series of events in the autumn that brings people from across the country to discuss what practical steps we need to take to create a fairer Scotland. The views and ideas we have heard will contribute to the development of a Social Justice Action Plan – to be published in early 2016. So go on, it’s our Scotland, it’s time to have your say on our future”
 

 

This is what the Fairer Scotland project is inviting everyone to take part in says. Having been invited to take part in this by Glenn Liddal who runs People Know How – a charity which Ragged University is working with, I said yes. I have great respect for Glenn and his vision for building opportunities for people to take part in such conversations.

Please come along and contribute what you think should go into the Fairer Scotland report. We will be running sessions and conversations where we discuss the ideas and also put our own contributions onto the boards. Glenn will also be giving a talk about his work developing a social innovation academy and I will be talking about some of the suggestions which I think will make Scotland a fairer place.

Event outline

12.00 – 12.15 REGISTRATION AND COFFEE
At the main table there will be sticky labels for participants to make up names badges. They will also need to let them know about photography and filming taking place. They will be asked to complete a media consent form. People are welcome to decline. Once completed, they lead everyone in and offered tea / coffee.
 
12.15 – 12.30 WELCOME
Glenn will give a short introduction about People Know How and why it is hosting this event. Following that, the agenda will be explained and also the fire alarm safety procedure and the washrooms location. Once done that, Alex will proceed to present the fairer Scotland’s intentions and introducing the main objective of this event
 
12.30 – 12.40 POST-IT
What fairer Scotland means to you? People are asked to share ideas and put them on post-its. Later, we will organise the information and share it.
 
12.40 -1.20 WORKSHOP 1: DISCUSSION GROUP
12.40 – 12.45 during the first five minutes Alex will present the next activity. There will be 5 tables with 5 different themes: Healthier, Happier, Treated with Respect, Having Opportunities and Equality. Following that, people will be invited to go to the table that they are interested in most. Each group will have a question to which they will need to find answers and give their ideas. They will rotate on 2 tables, 2 different themes. And they will spend 10 minutes approximately in each table. All recollected answers will be useful to help have a fairer Scotland.

12.55 – 1.05 table 2.
1.05 – 1.20 Sharing our conversations. Alex / Glenn will lead a discussion between the different tables to get the information they have been talking in small groups. – During this time, Alex, Glenn and Miren will organise the post-it by theme for later.
 
1.20 – 1.50 WORKSHOP 2
This workshop will have the aim to organise the information that the Government already have. Create discussion all the time
1.20 -1.30 What fairer Scotland mean to you? Share the information the attendants gave at the beginning of the event.
1.30 – 1.40 Government information. Share all the points and talk about it. What is first?
1.40 – 1.50 What is missing? What solutions can you think of?
1.50 – 2.00 CLOSE & SIA next hour. Thank everyone and tell them we will later gather all the data and keep all attendants and interested people updated through the website. Explain that PKH have created a Social Innovation Academy and we are offering a FREE training course in Community Development and a guaranteed volunteer placement with one of our partners. If they are interested, the next half hour will explain this.
