In my younger days, hares were a common sight on the hills and golf courses within the city limits. The Braid Hills, Ravelston Dykes behind the zoo, Blackford Hill and Arthur’s Seat were all places I used to hunt “city hares” with my rifle.
This inductive (Bryman 2012:8,12,111) research project was based on nine in-depth and unstructured interviews carried out between February and May 2014, resulting in rich (Charmaz 2006:10) qualitative data. Seven of the interviews were transcribed verbatim, one was lost due to the audio file being corrupted and another was excluded as the participant was deemed to not have experienced food poverty. Ray Oldenburg’s (1989) influential work on third places (or third spaces) within communities has been pivotal in encouraging sociologists, civic leaders and activists to look critically at how our public spaces for congregating (e.g. museums, cafes, pubs, parks, even barber shops) can provide a locus for democratic discussion and debate, community action, creative thought and expression, and importantly also for frivolity, friendship, and harmonious interaction. I’m an 18 year old singer/songwriter. I play acoustic guitar and sing my own songs and some covers with a mixture of genres. My sound has been described as soulful. I like to write about whatever springs to mind, some turn out to be quite chilled out and some turn out to be pretty funky. I’ve recently came back from a music course in Motherwell and can’t wait to start gigging in Edinburgh. The Banking Game: Analysis of the extinction of the bank as trusted institution and NONIIs as an indicator of non-reciprocal strategies by Doreen Soutar
The crisis in the financial markets in 2007 has drawn much attention to the way banks operate, and in particular the interaction between the trading and retail divisions. Here an evolutionary model is used as a basis to examine bank behaviour towards their customers, suggesting that banks are utilising competitive strategies in an essentially cooperative environment. The example of non-interest bearing profit-making activities is used to demonstrate this strategy, and it is suggested that current bank size and attitude towards customers threatens to render large banks with extinction.
