26th Nov 2015: I’m not a designer. Am I? by Jamie Cooke
Come along to The Counting House at 7pm to listen to Jamie, share a crust of bread, and hear his thoughts…
Title of talk:
I’m not a designer. Am I?
Bullet points of what you would like to talk about:
- Design and the Power to Create – a non-designer’s view
- Design within my work/society
- Are we all designers?
A few paragraphs on your subject:
I am not a designer. In fact I’m about as far from the profession as it is possible to be. Yet I’ve found that more and more my work is being shaped and influenced by design thinking, and the impact that it can have on a wide variety of areas.
But I’m not a designer, am I?
I’d like to argue that I am, and so are you. Design is fundamentally a creative response to the world, a chance to imagine how it could look and work differently – this drive (which we at the RSA dramatically call the Power to Create) is, in my opinion, one of the fundamental aspects of what makes us human. Yet too often that creative impulse is suppressed within our work, leaving us missing out on some crucial innovation.
So let’s free our creative impulses and get our juices flowing – we can all be designers, without having to wear hip clothing.
A few paragraphs about you:
I’m the Head of RSA Scotland, working with our Fellowship in Scotland and across the world to try and creatively make the world a better place – global solutions to global problems if you like. I primarily spend my time drinking coffee and connecting the people who do have ideas, so that I can vicariously live off their success.
I live in Bishopbriggs with my wife, two kids and cat, and like lots of things, but especially wine.
And I’m not a designer. Or am I?
