This is one of Stevenson’s less well-known books, yet it marks an important shift in the literature of empire and is also a very good read. Because of its sceptical approach to empire, Stevenson’s tale of misadventure in the South Seas prepares the way for Joseph Conrad’s landmark text, Heart of Darkness.
