During the Edinburgh International Festival of August 2012 twenty two talks were given at Leith on the Fringe at the Out of the Blue venue. They were free and open to everyone

The Consciousness of the Long Distance Runner; The Exercise Theory of Relativity

Bullet points you would like to cover:

The absolute overriding parameter in all exercise and recovery physiology is that of optimally provisioning cerebral energy, via the liver, over and above all other organs and tissues. Failure to optimally provision cerebral energy, via the liver, during each of these two events results in chronic metabolic stress and increased risk of all the metabolic diseases.
Athletes and their coaches are universally ‘liver blind’ and failure to make such provision results in training deficits, poor performance and long term negative health.

10th August 2011: Future Sleep; The Nocturnal Fast, Cerebral Energy and the Honey/Insulin/Melatonin (HYMN) Cycle by Mike McInnes

Future Sleep: The Nocturnal Fast, Cerebral Energy and the Honey/Insulin/Melatonin (HYMN) Cycle.

Bullet points you would like to cover:

  • In the west it is customary to retire to bed with a depleted liver and activate, not sleep and recovery physiology, rather chronic nocturnal metabolic stress, the only way the brain may partition glucose in favour of cerebral provision.
  • This cultural practice results from the universal myth, put about by diet gurus and not challenged by the health professions, that it is unhealthy to ‘eat late’.
  • Chronic nocturnal metabolic stress rapidly increases risk of metabolic syndrome (diabetes/obesity/heart disease) and alzheimer’s disease.

1st June 2011 Sleep and The Exercise Theory of Relativity by Mike McInnes

mike mcinnes

Although it is counter-intuitive, sleep and exercise present the brain with similar energy challenges, that of optimal provision of cerebral energy, via the liver. Failure to optimally provision cerebral energy in each of the above events results in chronic metabolic stress, and increased risk of metabolic diseases.
During the nocturnal fast this failure to pre-provision the liver (and therefore the brain), results in chronic activation of the HPA (stress) system and increased risk of metabolic syndrome (diabetes/obesity/heart disease and alzheimer’s disease).
The same ‘liver blind’ approach in sport results in osteoporosis, infertility, increased risk of infections and in American professional footballers increased risk of diabetes from age 35.  Italian footballers express 5 times the national average for motor neurone disease.

This talk focuses on the way to optimally provision cerebral energy during exercise and during the nocturnal fast. The Exercise Theory of Relativity takes Einstein’s beautiful formula E = MC2  and reverses it to E = CM2

26th July Cannabis and the Munchies by Mike McInnes

The Munchies: Humans are natural cannabis signallers (cannabinols) by Mike McInnes

Cannabis signalling regulates cerebral glucose metabolism.  Modern dietary culture drives up glucose (hyperglycaemia) and insulin (hyperinsulinism).  Each of these Twin Hypers act as independent cannabis signalling systems.  Central cannabis signalling inhibits glucose uptake into the brain, causing chronic cerebral hunger (The Munchies).
Modern dietary food culture contributes to chronic cerebral hunger via the Twin Hypers, and to increased cannabinoid signalling, resulting in loss of weight control and obesity. No person need ever to have consumed cannabis in any form, to act as a natural cannabis signaller, and to gain weight as a result.
