Education of Music by Dan Zambas

The education of music is traditionally taught in notated form. Following the teachings from historical composers and musicians, educators seek to pass on this knowledge to students to inspire them. In the past twenty years we have seen a development of the traditional teachings into popular music. This has led to specific issues regarding the relevance of musical notation and how it applies to modern music.

Philosophy and Music by Dan Zambas

Ancient philosophers such as Aristotle and Plato recognised the unity between music and philosophy.

The artistic expression of a piece of music could be described as philosophy using sound. Instrumental Classical music can be a very profound experience and the content of the music can be incredibly descriptive. Instruments playing characters, melodic themes reproduced in a variety of ways during the course of the piece, these are left to the audience’s imagination. This can provide the listener with a wide range of conclusions; from purely enjoying the music, to a deeper understanding of themselves. Read more…

Music: Paul Montague

I am a professional musician who has been playing and recording music for ten years. During this time I have played with Jacobs Pillow, The Black Diamond Express, Big Red, and The Discipline. I now play harmonica and sing with the Edinburgh blues band Missing Cat, who have toured Scotland and played several gigs in Europe.
Well, it all started back in year zero with a band called Delta and a lot of smoke, later there was talk of world domination and of course enlightenment. We decided that if it was in fact noise and playing with other people’s heads in smoky rooms that was to be the way… then that’s just the way it had to be…The only reason we do it is because it gets us high playing all this Frock, Flazz & Blues music.

Music: Joolz

From as young as I can remember I have had troubles with my hearing. I had 3 separate operations on my ears as a child and eventually my hearing improved enough that I was able to hear music properly for the first time.

Music: The Broken Boy

The Broken Boy is an Edinburgh based singer-songwriter, who you may have met around town busking, or heard playing in one of the city’s many music-friendly pubs. He is currently working towards the release of his debut LP, On the Mend: Ready to Fly.

His music is soulful, yet still folk-like in its composition, and the acoustic instrumentation keeps the performance connected with the listener on a personal level. It is sewn around tales of loss, hope and joy, taking you on a journey from the despair of Katie, through the hope of Home into the light of Shine.

The Origin of Ragged Music by Dan Zambas

Myself and Gary Boast approached Alex Dunedin who was running the Ragged project to create the foundations of the music arm of Ragged at the beginning of 2011. Working alongside musical colleagues and venue owners we aimed to create the philosophies of an all-inclusive project that would strike a chord within the music industry on every level; from the musician learning their instrument to the large organisations that publish and sell music to the consumers.
We began by asking ourselves what resources would we have wanted at the beginning of our musical journey and begin to make them accessible to individuals wanting to take their music to society. We recorded unsigned artists, live gigs and co-ordinated over thirty events alongside Alex Dunedin at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This experience was invaluable to the Ragged project and helped validate the need for artistic creativity to be treated as an important aspect of social inclusion within society. Read more…
